GENERAL FAQs

What is yoga?

In the ancient language of Sanskrit, from which the word was born, yoga means “union or yoke.” It is a practice built on the fundamental foundation of connection among all things, and within ourselves. Yoga was developed well over 5000 years ago, out of the quest for greater personal freedom, health, longevity and heightened self-understanding.

Today, yoga offers these same benefits. Experienced as a moving meditation using asanas (yoga poses) and breath, intricately linked together, yoga opens our bodies and minds, strengthens and calms us. Through a regular yoga practice we typically experience:

  • Stress relief, which also lowers cortisol in the body (known to cause excess belly fat)

  • Increased strength and flexibility

  • More muscle tone

  • Increased energy levels

  • Increased clarity

  • Weight management

  • Improved circulation

  • Improved sleep

  • Decreased blood pressure

  • Increased sense of peace

“Advanced” yoga, believe it or not, is less about difficult poses and more about the alignment of internal energy, or subtle body. When we leave a class, and feel so good, what we are noticing is not just the effects of a physical practice, but the residue of having awakened energy centers within.

How do I know which class is right for me?

For those who are just beginning to practice, we recommend starting with whatever offering calls to you. We offer Beginner Series from time to time, where foundations of studio practice and poses are laid out. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter (at the bottom of pages here) and keep an eye on the workshop page.

Passive Classes can be a wonderful way to orient to studio routines.

Share with the teacher that you are new to (Samadhi) yoga for a little extra attention.

The Samadhi community creates a truly supportive and friendly environment. Here you will gain confidence in the poses, learn how to deepen your breath and focus, and begin to mindfully build strength and flexibility, both physically and energetically. Taking the time to learn the fundamentals, little by little, will greatly enhance your overall experience and longevity with the practice.

What should I bring to class?

All you need is yourself. Bring a mat if you have one. We have loaner mats available, and we sell mats in our boutique. “Props,” or blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters are ready for you to use during class.

What should I wear?

Please don’t give too much thought to your apparel, but do wear comfortable clothing you can easily move in. No socks please. We practice barefoot for grounding, traction and balance, as well as therapeutic benefits to the feet when they can also move freely.

Should I drink water before class?

You might not want to drink a lot of water right before or during class, but you are welcome to bring your water bottle into class. We provide purified water in the lobby. You might even purchase a Samadhi water bottle!
